Our course structure
Foundation BSL
Perfect for absolute beginners who have never signed before. Over eight weeks, you'll learn the BSL alphabet, number systems, essential everyday phrases, and basic conversational grammar. The course includes 32 video lessons, downloadable practice sheets, and access to our student discussion forum where you can ask questions and practice with peers. By the end, you'll be able to introduce yourself, discuss your interests, ask and answer simple questions, and understand fundamental sentence structures. All lessons are self-paced with lifetime access to materials.
Conversational Fluency
For learners who have completed foundation-level study or equivalent experience. This twelve-week programme deepens your vocabulary across topics like work, health, travel, and current events. You'll master complex grammatical structures including classifiers, role shift, and spatial referencing. The course includes weekly live practice sessions with deaf BSL tutors, where you'll engage in unscripted conversations and receive personalised feedback. You'll also learn storytelling techniques and develop the confidence to sign in unpredictable social situations. Prerequisite: completion of Foundation BSL or demonstrable basic signing ability.
Professional Interpreter Track
Advanced programme for those pursuing careers as registered interpreters. This intensive sixteen-week course covers simultaneous interpretation techniques, ethical frameworks for professional practice, specialist vocabulary for medical and legal contexts, and the cultural competencies required to work across deaf and hearing spaces. Includes supervised interpretation assignments, case study analysis, and preparation for professional registration exams. Students will engage in role-play scenarios simulating real-world interpreting situations, from GP appointments to court proceedings. Graduates of this course often go on to complete formal certification through recognised bodies. Prerequisite: advanced BSL fluency or completion of Conversational Fluency course.
BSL for Educators
Specifically designed for teachers, teaching assistants, and education professionals supporting deaf students in mainstream or specialist settings. Learn signs relevant to classroom instruction, subject-specific vocabulary for maths, science, and humanities, and strategies for creating visually accessible learning environments. The course addresses common challenges like managing group discussions with deaf and hearing students, adapting lesson plans for visual learners, and fostering peer communication across language differences. Includes case studies from practicing educators and downloadable classroom resources. Ten weeks, self-paced with optional monthly group workshops. No BSL experience required, though basic signing knowledge is helpful.
Family Communication Package
Tailored for families with deaf children or relatives who want to build a shared language at home. Focuses on everyday household communication—mealtimes, bedtime routines, emotional expression, conflict resolution, and storytelling. The course acknowledges that families often learn together at different paces, so materials are structured for both adults and younger learners. Includes activities for practicing as a family unit, guidance on creating a bilingual home environment, and resources for explaining BSL to extended family or schools. Twelve weeks with flexible pacing, designed to fit around family schedules. Suitable for families where BSL is new to all members or where some have more experience than others.
Workplace BSL Essentials
For professionals who need basic BSL competency in customer-facing or team environments. Covers workplace-specific scenarios: meetings, customer service interactions, health and safety communication, and professional introductions. You'll learn how to conduct simple transactions, give directions, communicate policies clearly, and handle common workplace exchanges. Six weeks of focused instruction with industry-specific modules available for retail, hospitality, healthcare, and public services. Ideal for organisations training multiple staff members. Group discounts available for teams of five or more.
